Groste Ridge Panorama at Passo del Groste

At 2,437 metres, the Passo del Groste is the highest point reachable by cable car from Madonna di Campiglio and delivers one of the most theatrical panoramas in the entire Trentino — a full 360-degree sweep from the Brenta Dolomites to the Adamello glacier and, on clear days, the distant outline of the Ortler massif.

The Ride Up and the Ridge Walk

The Groste gondola departs from the northern edge of the village and climbs steeply through pine forest before bursting out above the treeline onto a bare, wind-sculpted plateau. The ten-minute ride alone is worth the ticket price as the Brenta towers loom progressively closer, their pale limestone faces turning amber in morning light.

From the upper station, a marked path (Sentiero 316) follows the ridge westward for about 2 km to a natural rocky belvedere overlooking the Vedretta degli Sfulmini glacier. Bring a windproof jacket even in July — gusts at the pass regularly exceed 40 km/h.

Sunrise and Alpenglow Photography

Photographers who book the first cable car of the day (usually 8:30) are rewarded with alpenglow on Cima Brenta — the peak turns a deep rose-gold for roughly 15 minutes before the light normalises. The Rifugio Groste, sitting right at the pass, opens its terrace at 9:00 and serves excellent espresso and apple strudel, making it easy to linger.

In winter the passo sits at the top of the Groste ski area, one of the three interconnected ski zones of the Skirama Dolomiti pass. Advanced skiers can drop off the back of the ridge on the legendary Canalone Miramonti black run, a 1,000-metre vertical descent back to the village.
