Pintxos Crawl on Calle Gamarra & the Harbour Front

Lekeitio punches well above its size when it comes to pintxos — the Basque bar snack that is simultaneously a canapé, a social ritual and an art form. The handful of bars clustered around Calle Gamarra and the harbour square serve some of the most creative and generous pintxos on the entire Basque Coast.

Where to Start

Bar Txintxirri on the harbour front is a local institution, its counter heaped with gildas (the classic olive-anchovy-guindilla skewer), bacalao croquetas and seasonal specials chalked on a board. Arrive at 13:00 when the pintxos are freshest and the bar is buzzing with fishermen and families.

A short walk along Calle Gamarra, Taberna Arropain is known for its hot pintxos made to order — the txipirones (baby squid) in their own ink on a slice of toasted bread is a dish that justifies the trip on its own. Wash it down with a cold Txakoli, the sharp, slightly fizzy local white wine poured from a height to aerate it.

The Art of the Crawl

The correct approach is one or two pintxos and a drink per bar, then move on. Locals do this standing at the counter, never sitting — sitting is for meals, standing is for pintxos. The rhythm is social, unhurried and deeply enjoyable.

Lekeitio's fishing heritage shows in the seafood-heavy menus: anchovies from the bay, spider crab, kokotxas (cod cheeks) and fresh-caught bonito in season (July–October). These are not tourist adaptations — this is what people here actually eat.
