Lea River Estuary & Ogella Beach Walk
A few kilometres west of Lekeitio, the Lea river meets the sea in a quiet, reed-fringed estuary that is a protected natural area and a magnet for wading birds. Follow the riverside path and you reach Ogella, a small, cliff-backed beach that feels like a secret even in midsummer — one of the finest short walks on the Basque coast.
The estuary path
The walk begins at the Karraspio beach car park and follows the southern bank of the Lea river westward through riparian woodland and past traditional Basque farmsteads (caseríos). The path is flat, well-maintained and takes about 45 minutes at a relaxed pace to reach the village of Ispaster at the river mouth.
The estuary is part of the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve buffer zone and shelters herons, egrets, kingfishers and, in winter, migratory ducks. Bring binoculars if you have them; early morning is the best time for birdwatching before the trail gets busy.
Ogella beach: the reward
From Ispaster, a short signposted path descends through pine forest to Ogella, a narrow arc of dark sand and pebble hemmed in by dramatic limestone cliffs. The beach faces west, which makes it one of the best sunset spots on this stretch of coast, and the swell rolling in from the open Atlantic gives it a wilder, more rugged character than Lekeitio's sheltered bay.
There are no facilities at Ogella — no kiosks, no sunbed hire, no showers — which is precisely the point. Carry everything you need, leave nothing behind, and you will have one of those rare Basque coast experiences that feels genuinely undiscovered.
