Isuntza & Karraspio Beaches
Lekeitio's twin beaches — Isuntza on the town side and Karraspio across the tidal island — frame one of the most photogenic bays in the Basque Country. At low tide you can walk across the sandbar to the island of San Nicolás and feel like you're standing in the middle of the sea.
Two Beaches, One Island
Isuntza hugs the harbour front and fills with locals in summer, its calm waters sheltered by the breakwater and the wooded headland. The promenade behind it is lined with pintxo bars and ice-cream kiosks, so drying off and eating well happen in the same ten-minute radius.
Karraspio, reached by crossing the sandbar or a short walk over the hill, is wider, wilder and less crowded. Surfers appear in autumn when Atlantic swells push in, and the backdrop of green cliffs makes every photo look implausibly beautiful.
The Tidal Island Walk
The islet of San Nicolás sits between the two beaches and is accessible on foot for roughly two hours either side of low tide. A small hermitage crowns the top, and the 360-degree views of the bay, the harbour and the Basque hills are the best free panorama in town.
Check the tide tables at the tourist office or on the Euskalmet app before you set out — the channel fills faster than it looks and the island has caught out more than a few distracted tourists.
