Basílica de Santa María de la Asunción
Rising above Lekeitio's old port on a rocky promontory, this 15th-century Gothic church is one of the finest in the entire Basque Country — a genuine rival to the cathedrals of the big cities, hiding in a small fishing town of 7,000 people. Its soaring three-nave interior, ornate altarpiece and flying buttresses demand at least an hour of your time.
A church that punches above its weight
Construction began in the late 14th century and continued through the 15th, resulting in a late Gothic structure with Flemish influences visible in the richly carved wooden altarpiece — one of the largest retablos in the Basque Country, gilded and painted with extraordinary detail. The church was declared a National Monument in 1931.
The exterior flying buttresses are unusually dramatic for a Basque parish church and give the building a faintly cathedral-like silhouette when seen from the harbour. Climb the steps from the fishing port and the façade reveals itself gradually, which is exactly as the medieval builders intended.
The harbour steps and the view
The wide stone staircase leading up to the church's south portal is a social hub in the evenings, where locals gather to watch the fishing boats return and the sun drop behind the hills. It doubles as the best free viewpoint over the inner harbour and the colourful terraced houses of the old town.
Inside, look for the Gothic tomb slabs set into the floor and the 16th-century organ, still used for concerts during the town's summer festival programme. Mass is still celebrated regularly — check the door for times before planning a cultural visit.
