Isuntza & Karraspio Beaches
Lekeitio's two main beaches flank the Lea river estuary in a near-perfect horseshoe, offering calm, turquoise water that looks more Mediterranean than Atlantic. Isuntza on the town side and Karraspio across the river are both Blue Flag certified and easy to reach, yet never feel like a tourist factory.
Two beaches, one river crossing
Isuntza sits right at the foot of the old town, backed by colourful fishing-village facades and the Gothic church of Santa María. The shallow, gently shelving sand makes it ideal for families, and a small promenade keeps things civilised without feeling over-developed.
Karraspio, on the opposite bank, is reached by a short walk over the footbridge or a tiny seasonal ferry. It tends to be quieter, fringed by green dunes, and the views back toward the island of San Nicolás and the church tower are the best in the bay.
The island in the middle
San Nicolás island sits in the mouth of the estuary like a natural full stop, accessible on foot at low tide across a causeway of slippery but walkable rocks. A small hermitage crowns the top, and the crossing itself — with water rushing past your ankles — is one of those simple Basque pleasures that stays with you.
Timing matters: check the local tide tables before you set off, as the window for a dry crossing can be as short as two hours. The island rewards those who make it with panoramic views of both beaches and the open Cantabrian Sea.
