Lea Estuary & Lumentxa Hill Walk
The Río Lea flows into the sea just west of Lekeitio, creating a reed-fringed estuary that is a haven for wading birds and a strikingly peaceful counterpoint to the busy beach. Combine it with the coastal path up Lumentxa Hill and you have one of the best half-day walks on the Basque Coast.
The Estuary Path
A flat, easy trail follows the eastern bank of the Lea from the road bridge near Amoroto down to the river mouth, passing through willow scrub and reed beds where grey herons, egrets and kingfishers are reliably spotted. The walk takes about 40 minutes one way and is suitable for all ages.
The point where the river meets the sea — a narrow channel between the dunes and the rocks — is one of those quietly beautiful spots that doesn't appear in any guidebook. Bring binoculars if you have them; the bird life is genuinely impressive year-round.
Lumentxa Hill Coastal Path
From the western edge of Lekeitio, a signed GR path climbs steeply to the summit of Lumentxa (cutting through gorse and fern), where the remains of an Iron Age hillfort sit alongside a modern cross and views that stretch from Cabo Ogoño to the east and the cliffs of Ogella to the west.
The descent towards Ogella beach is dramatic — a narrow path along a clifftop with the Atlantic crashing below. Ogella is a wild, usually empty cove accessible only on foot, with no facilities and no crowds: exactly the kind of place that makes the Basque Coast so addictive.
