Fiesta de San Antolín & the Goose Race (Antzar Eguna)
Every 1–8 September, Lekeitio hosts the Fiesta de San Antolín, climaxing on 5 September with Antzar Eguna — the Day of the Goose — a centuries-old harbour festival where young men hang from the neck of a (now artificial) goose suspended on a rope over the water and try to hold on as they're dunked repeatedly into the bay.
What Actually Happens
Teams of young men in traditional white-and-red dress take turns gripping a grease-slicked rope from which a goose figure hangs over the harbour mouth. Rowing boats pull the rope taut, launching the competitor skyward, then release, plunging them into the sea. The crowd on the quayside goes absolutely berserk.
The tradition dates to at least the 17th century and was originally performed with a live goose — animal welfare laws changed that in the 1990s, but the spectacle, the noise and the communal energy are utterly unchanged. This is not a tourist performance; it is the real festival life of a Basque fishing town.
How to Experience It
Arrive early on 5 September to claim a spot on the harbour wall — by midday the quayside is packed shoulder to shoulder. The bars around the port stay open all day and the atmosphere is a cross between a village fête and a rock concert.
The wider San Antolín week includes traditional Basque sports (stone lifting, log chopping), live music every night, and the town's best pintxos bars running extended hours with special festival menus. If you can time a visit to Lekeitio for this week, do it.
