Ski Touring the Col de Balme at Sunrise
For those who want to earn their turns, a pre-dawn ski tour from Le Tour to the Col de Balme (2,204 m) on the Franco-Swiss border is one of the most memorable winter experiences in the Chamonix valley — skins on skins, headtorches cutting through the dark, and a summit reached just as the first alpenglow ignites Mont Blanc across the valley.
The Route
The tour begins at the Le Tour ski area car park and follows the pisted runs before peeling off onto the open snowfield below the Col de Balme, a broad, non-technical ascent of around 600 m that takes 2–2.5 hours at a steady skinning pace. The gradient is forgiving enough for intermediate ski tourers but rewarding enough to feel like a genuine alpine objective.
At the col, the Swiss canton of Valais opens up to the north — the village of Trient far below, the Grand Combin massif on the horizon — while behind you the entire Chamonix valley and the Mont Blanc massif glow in the morning light. It is, without exaggeration, a view worth getting out of bed at 05:00 for.

Booking through them is the safest and most informative way to experience the route for the first time.
Avalanche safety is non-negotiable in this terrain: carry a beacon, probe and shovel, check the daily BERA avalanche bulletin (available at meteofrance.com) and never tour alone. The guides will brief you fully on current snowpack conditions before departure.
