Chamonix Saturday Market (Marché de Chamonix)
Every Saturday morning the pedestrian streets around Place du Mont-Blanc in Chamonix fill with stalls piled high with Savoyard cheeses, charcuterie, mountain honey and hand-thrown pottery — a 15-minute drive from Le Tour and one of the liveliest weekly markets in the French Alps.
What to Buy & Taste
Look for Reblochon fermier straight from the Aravis farms — the real farmhouse version carries a green label and a flavour nothing like the supermarket version. Alongside it you'll find Beaufort d'alpage, the 'prince of Gruyères', sold in massive golden wheels by affineurs who age it in mountain caves.
Charcuterie stalls stock diots (Savoyard pork sausages), diot fumé and thin slices of bresaola-style viande des Grisons from just across the Swiss border. Grab a paper cone of warm roasted chestnuts in autumn.
Local honey producers sell single-origin mountain flower honeys in small jars — a wildflower variety from high pastures above 1,800 m has a complexity that puts supermarket honey to shame and makes a perfect, lightweight souvenir.
Beyond the Food Stalls
Craft stalls offer hand-carved wooden chamois, locally designed merino wool base layers, and watercolour prints of the Aiguilles — quality varies, so take your time browsing before committing.
A cluster of food trucks and café terraces around the market perimeter serve café au lait and pain au chocolat from the excellent Maison Gamba bakery, making a leisurely Saturday breakfast an easy pleasure.
The market typically wraps by 13:00, leaving the afternoon free for a hike or a drive up to the Aiguille du Midi cable car before the queues rebuild.
