Chamonix Saturday Market (Marché du Samedi)
Every Saturday morning the streets around Place du Mont Blanc in Chamonix fill with one of the Haute-Savoie's liveliest outdoor markets — a colourful, fragrant sprawl of local cheese, charcuterie, honey, mountain herbs and handcrafted souvenirs that perfectly captures the rhythm of valley life.
What to Buy
The cheese stalls alone justify the 10 km drive from Le Tour: look for wheels of Reblochon fermier, creamy Tomme de Savoie and the pungent, washed-rind Abondance AOP, often sold by the farmers who made them. Pair a wedge with a saucisson sec flavoured with Génépi, the local alpine herb liqueur, for an instant alpine picnic.
Honey producers from the valley sell wildflower and sapin (fir) varieties with a distinctly resinous, mountain character you will not find in a supermarket. Small jars of myrtille (bilberry) jam and pots of crème de marrons make ideal, TSA-friendly gifts.
Atmosphere & Timing
Arrive before 09:30 to beat the crowds and catch producers restocking their stalls — this is when you get the best selection and the most relaxed chat with vendors. The market winds down around 13:00, so a morning visit pairs naturally with lunch at one of the brasseries lining Rue du Docteur Paccard nearby.
In December and January a smaller but equally charming Christmas market takes over the same square, with mulled Génépi, carved wooden decorations and raclette stations sending steam into the cold mountain air.
