Mer de Glace Glacier
Spilling 7 km down the northern flank of Mont Blanc, the Mer de Glace is the longest glacier in France and one of the most awe-inspiring natural spectacles in the Alps. Standing at its edge, watching millennia-old blue ice creak and groan, reframes your sense of geological time entirely.
Getting There & the Montenvers Railway
The classic approach is the Montenvers rack railway from Chamonix centre, a steep 20-minute ride that deposits you at 1,913 m with a jaw-dropping panorama of the glacier stretching toward the Grandes Jorasses.
From the station a series of fixed ladders and steps descend to the glacier surface itself, where crampons are provided and guides lead you across the ice — a visceral, crunching experience unlike anything in a visitor centre.
Ice Cave & Glacier Museum
Carved fresh each spring into the glacier's flank, the ice cave glows in electric blues and greens and is lined with sculpted chambers that illustrate the glacier's retreat over decades — sobering and beautiful in equal measure.
The small Glaciorium museum beside the station uses interactive displays to explain glaciology and climate change, giving scientific context to what your eyes are already telling you about the shrinking ice.
