Tucked into Le Tour village itself, Le Bivouac is a wood-panelled mountain restaurant beloved by locals for generous Savoyard classics and a sunny terrace that faces directly up toward the Glacier du Tour — the kind of meal where the scenery is as good as the cheese.
What to Order
The fondue savoyarde is the undisputed star: a pot of melted Beaufort and Comté arrives bubbling over a flame with a basket of crusty bread cubes and a small carafe of local white wine to wash it down — tradition dictates you drink white Apremont or Roussette de Savoie alongside, never water.
Tartiflette — a gratin of Reblochon, lardons, onion and potato — is the other essential order, served in a cast-iron dish that keeps it molten to the last forkful. In winter it's preceded by a simple green salad dressed in walnut oil from the Isère valley.
For those wanting something lighter, the assiette de charcuterie montagnarde pairs local cured meats with cornichons, butter and rye bread and works beautifully as a shared starter before a main of slow-braised beef daube.
Atmosphere & Timing
The restaurant fills quickly on weekends in both winter ski season and summer hiking season; booking a table for lunch (12:30) rather than dinner avoids the longest waits and lets you enjoy the terrace in full afternoon sun.
In winter, ski boots clatter on the wooden floors and the smell of melted cheese mingles with woodsmoke — an atmosphere that feels entirely authentic rather than staged for tourists.
After lunch, the village square is quiet enough to sit with a café and watch the télécabine gondolas glide silently overhead toward Charamillon — one of the most pleasant 20 minutes you'll spend in the Alps.
