Lac Blanc, Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve
At 2,352 m in the Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve, Lac Blanc is a high-alpine lake that reflects the entire Mont Blanc massif in near-perfect symmetry on calm mornings — a photograph so dramatic it looks artificially composited, yet entirely real.
The Hike from La Flégère
The classic approach starts from the La Flégère cable car station above Les Praz de Chamonix (accessible by free valley bus from Argentière, near Le Tour). From La Flégère at 1,877 m, a well-marked trail climbs steadily through rocky terrain for approximately 1.5 hours to reach the lake.
The path passes through a protected reserve where ibex are a common sight in early morning — they graze on the rocky slopes with remarkable indifference to hikers and make for extraordinary wildlife photographs.
Alternatively, a second gondola from La Flégère to the Index (2,385 m) reduces the hiking time significantly, leaving just a 30-minute traverse across the hillside to the lake — ideal if you want maximum time at the water's edge.
Timing for the Perfect Reflection
The reflection of Mont Blanc, the Aiguille Verte and the Drus in the lake surface is sharpest in the first two hours after sunrise, before afternoon valley winds disturb the water — meaning a very early start from Le Tour (around 06:30) is richly rewarded.
A small refuge, the Refuge du Lac Blanc, sits beside the lake and serves hot drinks and simple meals; in summer it also offers dormitory accommodation for those wanting to catch the sunrise without the early drive.
This spot appears on relatively few mainstream tourist itineraries compared to the Aiguille du Midi, yet delivers arguably the most iconic single image in the entire Mont Blanc region.
