Marché du Samedi on Place du Plot & Place du Breuil
Every Saturday morning, the old town's Place du Plot and the adjoining Place du Breuil fill with over 200 stalls selling everything from Velay lentils and Auvergne cheeses to hand-made lace and lavender honey. It is the social heartbeat of the city and the best single hour you can spend here.
What to Buy
The green lentil of Le Puy (Lentille Verte du Puy) holds France's very first AOC for a vegetable, awarded in 1996. Buy them direct from farmers at the market — they cook faster than supermarket lentils and have a peppery, nutty depth that bears no resemblance to the tinned variety.
Look also for Verveine du Velay liqueur (a local herbal spirit made from verbena), raw-milk Fourme d'Ambert cheese from nearby stalls, and jars of dark chestnut honey produced in the Allier gorges to the east.
The Lace Sellers
Le Puy is the historic capital of French needle-lace (dentelle au fuseau), and a handful of lace-makers still sell their work at the Saturday market. Prices reflect the extraordinary labour involved — a small collar can take 40 hours — but even a pair of lace earrings makes a memorable, genuinely local souvenir.
