Cathédrale Notre-Dame de l'Assomption & Rocher Corneille

Le Puy-en-Velay's skyline is one of the most dramatic in France: a Gothic cathedral clings to a volcanic plug while a 16-metre cast-iron Virgin watches over the valley from the adjacent Rocher Corneille. This UNESCO-listed ensemble has drawn pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago for over a thousand years.

The Cathedral

Built between the 10th and 13th centuries, Notre-Dame de l'Assomption is a masterpiece of Auvergnat Romanesque, its striped black-and-white stone façade borrowed from Moorish Andalusia. Climb the 134 steps of the Grand Escalier from the old town and you pass directly through the nave — one of the most theatrical entrances in European architecture.

Inside, look for the Black Madonna on the high altar, a 17th-century replica of the medieval original burned during the Revolution. The cloisters, with their polychrome arcades, are among the finest in southern France and deserve a slow, unhurried wander.

Rocher Corneille & the Iron Virgin

A five-minute walk from the cathedral brings you to the ticket booth for Rocher Corneille, the tallest of the city's volcanic necks. The 16-metre Notre-Dame de France statue was cast in 1860 from 213 cannons captured at Sebastopol during the Crimean War — you can actually climb inside her to a small viewing platform.

From the top of the rock, the panorama across the Velay basin, the green cone of Mont Anis and the distant Massif Central ridgeline is simply unforgettable, especially at golden hour when the cathedral façade glows amber.
