Chapelle Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe
Perched on a 85-metre volcanic needle that erupts from the valley floor like a stone finger, the 10th-century Chapelle Saint-Michel d'Aiguilhe is arguably the most audacious piece of sacred architecture in France. The 268 irregular lava-rock steps to the top reward you with vertiginous views and a perfectly preserved Romanesque interior.
The Climb & the Chapel
The staircase spirals around and through the rock itself, past ferns and dripping basalt, before delivering you onto a tiny platform in front of the chapel's ornate portal — decorated with Moorish-influenced geometric carvings that hint at the pilgrimage connections with Muslim Iberia. The chapel interior is minuscule but contains original 10th-century frescoes and a polychrome wooden Christ.
Unlike the cathedral, Saint-Michel feels genuinely intimate. On a quiet weekday morning you may have it almost to yourself, the wind off the Anis valley the only sound.
The View from the Top
From the narrow terrace beside the chapel you look directly across to the cathedral on its own volcanic plug, with the red-tiled rooftops of the medieval quarter cascading between them. It is the definitive photograph of Le Puy-en-Velay and changes character completely between morning light and the warm tones of late afternoon.
The valley below reveals the River Borne winding through market gardens, and on clear days the snow-capped Mézenc massif (the highest point in Ardèche at 1,753 m) appears on the southern horizon.
