What to Buy and Taste
The star local product is the Lentille Verte du Puy, the world's first legume to earn an AOC designation — look for stalls selling them loose by the kilo, often from the very farm that grew them. Pair your bag of lentils with a wedge of Fourme d'Ambert or Saint-Nectaire from the cheese vendors, and a small bottle of Verveine du Velay, a herbal liqueur made from locally harvested verbena that has been produced in the city since 1859.
Honey from the volcanic highlands — often buckwheat or wildflower varieties — is another standout. Several stalls also sell hand-made lace, a craft for which Le Puy has been famous since the 16th century; even a small handkerchief edging makes a beautiful, lightweight souvenir.
Navigating the Market
The food producers cluster around Place du Plot and the Rue Pannessac, while flowers, clothing and bric-a-brac spill onto Place du Breuil. The market runs from roughly 07:30 until 13:00; serious shoppers arrive before 09:00 when produce is freshest and the light is gorgeous on the medieval facades.
Several café-bars around Place du Plot open early and serve strong espresso and croissants to market-goers — grab a terrace seat and watch the whole theatre unfold around you.
