Gorges de la Loire & Lac du Bouchet Day Trips

Within 30 kilometres of Le Puy lie two of the Auvergne's most spectacular natural landscapes: the deep basalt gorges of the upper Loire river, where the young river carves through ancient lava flows between sheer black cliffs, and the perfectly circular Lac du Bouchet — a volcanic maar lake set inside a wooded crater with water so clear it reflects the surrounding beeches like a mirror. Both are e

Lac du Bouchet: A Crater Filled with Silence

Formed roughly 8,000 years ago when a magma pocket collapsed, the Lac du Bouchet sits at 1,208 metres altitude on the Devès volcanic plateau, about 25 km southwest of Le Puy. A flat, 4-kilometre path circles the entire lake through beech and pine forest, taking about 75 minutes at a gentle pace — it is one of the most peaceful walks in the Massif Central, with no motor boats, no development and almost no noise except birdsong.

The water temperature rarely exceeds 17°C even in August, making swimming bracing but possible from the small beach on the south shore. The colour of the water shifts from deep turquoise to steel grey depending on cloud cover — both are beautiful.

Gorges de la Loire: Black Basalt Drama

The Loire, still a young, fast river this far from its source on Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc, has cut a dramatic gorge through the basalt plateau north of Le Puy. The village of Lavoûte-sur-Loire, 10 km north of the city, sits at the bend of one of the river's great meanders and is accessible by a riverside path from the train station at Brives-Charensac.

The Château de Lavoûte-Polignac, a medieval fortress clinging to a cliff above the river bend, is open for visits in summer and provides the classic gorge viewpoint. The GR3 long-distance trail runs along the rim of the gorge — even a 2-hour section gives a sense of the raw volcanic landscape that defines this part of the Auvergne.
