Umbertino Quarter & Via del Prione
While day-trippers rush straight through La Spezia to catch the Cinque Terre train, the city's elegant Umbertino quarter — built during the late 19th and early 20th centuries around the naval expansion — rewards those who slow down with ornate Liberty-style palazzi, independent bookshops and the best aperitivo bars in town.
Architecture & Street Life
The grid of streets between Piazza Cavour and the Giardini Pubblici is lined with Liberty (Italian Art Nouveau) apartment buildings whose wrought-iron balconies, majolica tile friezes and carved stone faces are largely unnoticed by visitors focused on the coast.
Via del Prione, the pedestrian spine of the quarter, is where La Spezia genuinely lives — not performing for tourists but going about its day, shopping at the family-run salumeria, arguing at the newsstand and nursing espresso at the bar counter.
The Giardini Pubblici (public gardens) at the eastern end of Via del Prione are a handsome park with a small boating lake, a band-stand and benches full of retired fishermen; the perfect place to decompress after a hectic Cinque Terre day.
Aperitivo Culture & Evening Atmosphere
La Spezia has a genuine, un-staged aperitivo scene centred on the bars around Piazza Garibaldi and Via Fiume; from 6 p.m. the counters fill with spritz glasses and small plates of focaccia, olive ascolane and local cheese that function as a free light dinner.
Bar Centrale on Piazza Garibaldi is the anchor of this ritual — a century-old bar with marble tables and a mirrored back wall that has seen naval officers, dockworkers and poets all standing at the same counter.
The naval museum, Museo Tecnico Navale della Spezia on Viale Amendola, sits at the edge of the quarter and houses one of Europe's largest collections of ship figureheads, scale models and nautical instruments — a niche but genuinely fascinating two-hour detour.
