Castello di San Giorgio Panoramic Terrace
Perched on the hill directly above the city centre, the medieval Castello di San Giorgio delivers what is arguably the finest free panorama in the entire Gulf of Poets — a sweeping arc from the Apuan Alps across the harbour cranes, the Ligurian Sea and, on clear days, the distant silhouette of Corsica. The climb takes ten minutes and the reward is enormous.
The View and the Castle
The castle's outer ramparts are freely accessible and the terrace on the south-facing side frames the gulf in a way that makes every photograph look effortless. Sunset is the magic hour: the water turns copper-pink and the Cinque Terre headlands glow on the horizon to the northwest.
Inside the castle walls sits the Museo del Castello, which houses the original Bronze Age statue-stele found throughout the Lunigiana region — haunting, abstract human figures carved 4,000 years ago that you won't find displayed as well anywhere else in the world.
Getting There and Timing Your Visit
A steep but short staircase climbs from Via 27 Marzo in the old town; alternatively a slightly gentler path winds up from Via del Prione. The walk is shaded by umbrella pines and takes around 10–12 minutes at a comfortable pace.
Come in the early morning for soft light and empty ramparts, or at dusk when the city lights begin to flicker on below. Weekday evenings in summer the terrace is often used by locals for aperitivo with a view — joining them feels like the most Ligurian thing possible.
