Passeggiata Morin Seafront Promenade
While tourists sprint for the Cinque Terre ferry, La Spezia's own seafront — the Passeggiata Morin — unspools westward along the gulf in near-total peace, lined with palm trees, Liberty-style villas and a string of benches occupied by retired fishermen debating football. It is one of the most pleasant urban waterfront walks in Liguria and almost nobody outside the city knows it exists.
Walking the Promenade
The walk stretches roughly 2 km from the ferry terminal at Molo Italia westward past the Giardini Pubblici to the small beach at Canaletto. The path is flat, wide and shaded in sections — ideal in the heat of the afternoon when everywhere else feels punishing.
Along the way, the views across the gulf to the hills of Lerici and San Terenzo (where Shelley and Byron famously lived, giving the bay its 'Gulf of Poets' nickname) are constant and quietly beautiful. Bring binoculars if you have them — the naval base on the opposite shore sometimes has historic vessels moored alongside.
What to Find Along the Way
The Giardini Pubblici midway along the promenade contain a small but well-maintained rose garden and a Liberty-era bandstand that hosts free concerts on summer Sunday evenings — stumbling onto one feels like winning something. There's also a children's playground and a kiosk selling granita and cold drinks.
At the western end, the working-class neighbourhood of Canaletto has a handful of no-frills bars where a spritz costs €2.50 and the clientele is entirely local. Pull up a plastic chair and watch the fishing boats come in.
