Cinque Terre National Park Day Hike
Strung along a rugged coastline just minutes from La Spezia by train, the five pastel-stacked villages of Cinque Terre are among Italy's most iconic sights. The sentiero azzurro trail stitches them together above a dazzling Ligurian Sea.
The Trail & the Villages
Board a regional train from La Spezia Centrale and reach Riomaggiore in eight minutes — the southernmost village and the classic starting point for walkers heading north.
The most celebrated stretch runs between Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, where the path clings to cliff edges draped in wild rosemary, offering unobstructed sea panoramas at every bend.
Each village has its own character: Manarola for sunset reflections in the harbour, Corniglia for its hilltop quiet, and Monterosso for the only proper sandy beach in the park.
Practical Tips for the Walk
Buy the Cinque Terre Card (from €7.50/day) at La Spezia Centrale — it covers the coastal trail access fee and unlimited train hops between villages, which is essential if legs tire.
Start early, before 9 a.m., to beat tour-group crowds and catch the soft morning light that turns the painted facades gold. Carry at least one litre of water; fountains are scarce mid-trail.
The full five-village walk covers roughly 12 km with around 500 m of elevation gain — doable in a leisurely five hours with stops for focaccia and local Sciacchetrà wine along the way.
