Mercato Centrale di Via Carpenino
Every morning except Sunday, the covered Mercato Centrale on Via Carpenino erupts into a sensory carnival of Ligurian produce — fat bunches of basil, wheels of aged Parmigiano, silvery anchovies hauled in from the gulf hours earlier. This is where local chefs and nonnas shop, and where you'll eat better for €3 than at most restaurants.
What to Buy and Taste
Head straight for the fishmongers at the back: La Spezia's gulf is famous for mussels (mitili spezzini) farmed right in the harbour, sold live by the kilogram at prices that will astonish anyone used to restaurant mark-ups. Alongside them you'll find totani (flying squid) and branzino so fresh their eyes are still bright.
The deli stalls pile up farinata — the golden chickpea flatbread that is Liguria's greatest street food — baked in copper pans in wood-fired ovens just around the corner on Via Cavour. Buy a wedge, eat it standing, burn your fingers, repeat.
The Neighbourhood Around the Market
The streets radiating out from the market are lined with tiny alimentari and wine shops selling Colli di Luni DOC whites — the crisp Vermentino grown on hillsides just 20 km east is the perfect match for the local seafood. Pick up a bottle and a wedge of local toma cheese for a DIY picnic.
On Saturday mornings the market spills onto the surrounding streets with clothing and household stalls, giving the whole quarter a festive, slightly chaotic energy that feels entirely authentic.
