Les Flots Restaurant

Perched right on the Vieux-Port with an unobstructed view of the twin towers, Les Flots has been serving the freshest Atlantic seafood to La Rochelle locals since 1932. It is the kind of place where the tablecloths are white, the wine list is serious and the plateau de fruits de mer arrives like a still-life painting.

What to Order

Start with a half-dozen Marennes-Oléron oysters — the restaurant sources directly from the Charente-Maritime salt marshes and the quality is consistently exceptional. Follow with the sole meunière, cooked simply in brown butter and served whole, which is the dish that has kept regulars coming back for decades.

The bouillabaisse charentaise, a local riff on the Provençal classic made with Atlantic fish and a touch of Cognac, is the most distinctive dish on the menu and worth ordering 24 hours in advance if you're visiting in high season.

Atmosphere and Booking

The dining room is elegant without being stuffy, and the terrace tables overlooking the harbour are among the most coveted seats in the city. Book at least three days ahead for a terrace table in July and August.

Lunch is better value than dinner — the two-course formule déjeuner at around €28 includes a glass of local white wine and represents one of the best-priced quality meals on the waterfront.
