Marché Central des Halles

Housed in a handsome 19th-century iron-and-glass hall right in the city centre, La Rochelle's covered market is a daily theatre of Charentais produce, Atlantic seafood and artisan cheesemakers. Locals shop here every morning and the energy is infectious from the moment you walk through the doors.

What to Buy and Eat

The fish stalls are the undisputed stars — look for locally caught sole, sea bass and the prized Marennes-Oléron oysters, which are grown in the salt marshes just south of the city and have a distinctive, lightly iodised flavour. Many vendors will shuck oysters on the spot and hand them to you with a squeeze of lemon.

Beyond seafood, seek out Charentais butter, pineau des Charentes (a sweet fortified wine used in cooking and aperitifs), and the flat, buttery galette charentaise biscuit. A wedge of goat's cheese from a local fermier wrapped in chestnut leaves makes a perfect picnic ingredient.

Timing Your Visit

The market runs every morning until around 1 pm, but Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday are the biggest days when producers drive in from surrounding villages and the hall reaches full, glorious chaos.

Grab a stool at one of the tiny oyster bars tucked into the market's perimeter and order a dozen with a glass of crisp Muscadet — this is one of the great cheap pleasures of the French Atlantic coast.
