Vieux-Port & the Medieval Towers
Three stone sentinels — Tour Saint-Nicolas, Tour de la Chaîne and Tour de la Lanterne — have guarded La Rochelle's harbour entrance since the 14th century, and walking between them still feels like stepping onto a film set. The towers are fully climbable, and the panoramas over the bobbing masts of the Vieux-Port are among the best in Atlantic France.
The Towers Up Close
Tour Saint-Nicolas is the tallest and most labyrinthine, its spiral staircases and vaulted chambers rewarding those who squeeze to the top with a sweeping view across the Île de Ré bridge and the open Atlantic. Tour de la Chaîne opposite once anchored the great chain stretched nightly across the harbour mouth to block enemy ships — you can still see the iron rings embedded in the stone.
Tour de la Lanterne, a short stroll along the quay, served as both lighthouse and prison; look closely at the walls inside and you'll find hundreds of graffiti carved by English and Dutch sailors held captive here in the 17th and 18th centuries, an eerie and surprisingly moving archive of boredom and despair.
The Harbour Quayside
The arcaded quays of the Vieux-Port — particularly Cours des Dames — are lined with café terraces that fill with locals from mid-morning onwards. Order a glass of Pineau des Charentes and watch the fishing boats unload beside sleek racing yachts; La Rochelle hosts one of France's most prestigious offshore sailing races, the Vendée Globe departure city, and the maritime energy is palpable year-round.
At low tide, walk out along the stone jetty to get the classic postcard shot: all three towers aligned with the lighthouse island of Île de Ré shimmering in the background. Golden hour here is genuinely spectacular.
