The plateau de fruits de mer for two is the non-negotiable order: it arrives on a chrome stand packed with Marennes oysters, half a Breton lobster, langoustines, palourdes clams, bigorneaux (periwinkles) and half a crab, accompanied by rye bread, salted Charentais butter and a finger bowl. Pair it with a bottle of Muscadet Sèvre et Maine sur lie and you have one of the most satisfying lunches in France.
For a lighter option, the grilled sole meunière is textbook perfect — the fish sourced daily from the Vieux-Port market — and the fish soup, served with rouille and gruyère croutons, is thick enough to stand a spoon in. Finish with a slice of tarte aux pineau, a custard tart made with the local fortified wine.
The Setting and History
The dining room is a time capsule of mid-century French brasserie style: banquette seating, white tablecloths, framed maritime prints and the gentle clatter of silver seafood picks against china. It is neither trendy nor self-conscious, which is precisely its appeal. The staff have the practised, unhurried efficiency of people who have been doing this for decades.
The restaurant sits on one of the most cinematic corners in La Rochelle — you can eat with a direct view of Tour de la Chaîne through the window — and the terrace tables in summer are among the most coveted seats in the city. Book at least a week ahead for July and August.
