Vieux-Port & the Twin Towers
La Rochelle's old harbour is one of the most photogenic waterfronts in France, framed by three medieval towers that once controlled entry to the city. Stroll the quayside at golden hour and you'll understand why painters have been obsessed with this place for centuries.
The Three Towers
The Tour Saint-Nicolas and Tour de la Chaîne face each other across the harbour mouth, linked in the 14th century by a massive iron chain to block enemy ships. Climb Tour Saint-Nicolas for a labyrinthine interior of vaulted chambers and a rooftop view straight down into the bobbing masts of the marina.
A short walk inland stands the Tour de la Lanterne, the tallest of the trio and once a lighthouse, prison and watchtower rolled into one. Its walls are covered in graffiti carved by captive sailors and Huguenot prisoners — a haunting, intimate record of centuries of confinement.
The Harbour at Its Best
The quays of the Vieux-Port are lined with seafood restaurants and café terraces that fill fast on summer evenings. Arrive before 9 am to photograph the fishing boats unloading the night's catch before the tourist crowds arrive.
The harbour is also the departure point for ferries to the Île de Ré, so the waterfront hums with a genuine working energy that keeps it from feeling like a museum piece.
