Weiss Valley Walk to Fréland
The Weiss river flows right through the heart of Kaysersberg, and the flat valley-floor trail following its banks northward to the village of Fréland is one of the most accessible and rewarding half-day walks in the Vosges foothills — no serious elevation, constant scenery and a mountain village café at the far end.
The trail itself
The 7 km path (one way) follows the Weiss through alder-fringed meadows, past old mill stones and across wooden footbridges, with the forested Vosges slopes rising steeply on either side. In May, the banks are thick with wild garlic and the river runs fast and clear with snowmelt from the higher ridges.
The route passes through the hamlet of Kientzheim — worth a 10-minute detour to see its 16th-century fortified gate, the Lalli, a carved grimacing face designed to mock besieging armies — before continuing through open farmland to Fréland.
Fréland and the return
Fréland is a quiet Vosges village with a handful of farms, a small church and the Maison du Pays Welche, a community museum dedicated to the Welche people, a Romance-language minority unique to this corner of the Vosges. It is the kind of place that feels genuinely off the tourist circuit.
Return to Kaysersberg by the same riverside path (the light is completely different in the afternoon), or call a taxi from Fréland for the 8 km road return — the tourist office in Kaysersberg keeps a list of local drivers.
