Château de Kaysersberg
Perched on a rocky spur directly above the village, Kaysersberg's ruined 13th-century castle offers the most dramatic vantage point in the entire Alsatian wine route. The short climb rewards you with a panorama of half-timbered rooftops, the Weiss river valley and vine-striped hills rolling toward the Vosges.
The climb and the ruins
A well-marked footpath from the village centre reaches the keep in about 15 minutes, winding past wild roses and limestone outcrops. The cylindrical donjon dates to around 1227 and was built by Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II to control the valley road.
Once inside the roofless tower you can still trace the spiral staircase to the very top, where a 360-degree view takes in Colmar to the south and the Black Forest ridge across the Rhine on clear days.
Best time to visit
Golden hour in late afternoon turns the sandstone walls amber and the vineyards below glow with colour — bring a wide-angle lens. In December, the castle provides an unforgettable backdrop to the Christmas market lights twinkling in the streets below.
The site is freely accessible year-round and never crowded before 9 am, making an early-morning ascent a peaceful alternative to the busy midday rush.
