Kaysersberg Christmas Market
While Colmar and Strasbourg draw the crowds, Kaysersberg's Marché de Noël fills the medieval lanes with lantern light and mulled wine in a setting so perfectly preserved it feels genuinely historic rather than staged. Voted France's favourite Christmas market multiple times, it runs across four Advent weekends.
A village transformed
Stalls line the cobbled Rue du Général de Gaulle and spill into the central square, selling hand-carved wooden ornaments, bredele (Alsatian shortbread cookies), pain d'épices and locally produced Riesling glühwein from ceramic mugs you keep as a souvenir.
The half-timbered houses are strung with thousands of warm white lights, and the fortified bridge is decorated with fir garlands — photographers routinely describe it as the single most atmospheric Christmas scene in France.
What to eat and buy
Look for the stand selling flammekueche (tarte flambée) fresh from a wood-fired oven — the classic version with crème fraîche, lardons and onion is the one to order, eaten folded like a crêpe while standing at a barrel table.
Local artisans sell hand-blown glass baubles, embroidered Alsatian tablecloths and Munster cheese wheels. Arrive early on Saturday mornings when stock is freshest and the lanes are still navigable.
