Viewpoint above the Weiss Valley (Col des Bagenelles approach)
Drive or cycle four kilometres south of Kaysersberg along the D28 toward Kientzheim and pull off at the unpaved track that climbs into the grand cru Schlossberg vineyard — from the top ridge you get an unobstructed sweep over the Weiss valley, the village rooftops and the castle ruin, all framed by rows of Riesling vines.
Finding the spot
Park at the small gravel lay-by just past the Kientzheim village sign on the D28. A signed vineyard path (marked with yellow hiking blazes) switchbacks up through the Schlossberg grand cru, Alsace's first ever officially designated grand cru appellation from 1975.
The walk to the best viewpoint takes about 20 minutes and gains roughly 80 metres of elevation — manageable for most visitors, with the gradient easing near the top where the view opens up completely.
What you will see
On clear days the Black Forest ridgeline is visible beyond the Rhine plain to the east, while the Vosges peaks rise to the west. The foreground of terraced granite-soil vines adds a layer of texture that makes wide-angle shots sing.
Visit in late September or early October during harvest (vendanges) and you may see pickers working the rows — the combination of golden vines, medieval village and distant mountains is the quintessential Alsace image.
