Playa de Hondarribia (Playa Grande)

Stretching for nearly a kilometre along the sheltered mouth of the Bidasoa estuary, Hondarribia's main beach is one of the calmest and most swimmable on the entire Basque coast — a rarity in a region more famous for dramatic surf than gentle bathing. The water is warmer here than on the open Atlantic, and the backdrop of the medieval town on the hill makes it uniquely beautiful.

The beach itself

Playa Grande is a wide, gently shelving sandy beach with calm, relatively warm water thanks to its sheltered position inside the estuary. Families with children gravitate here precisely because the waves are gentle and the sea floor is sandy rather than rocky — a genuine exception on this coast.

The beach is well serviced with showers, sun-lounger hire and a row of chiringuito beach bars where you can eat grilled fish and drink cold beer with your feet practically in the sand.

The Hendaye connection

From the beach you can clearly see Hendaye Plage across the estuary in France — a surreal and charming reminder that you are standing at an international border. A small passenger ferry (txalupa) crosses between the two towns in minutes and makes for a delightful half-day excursion combining two countries, two languages and two culinary traditions.

The ferry runs regularly in summer from the Hondarribia dock adjacent to the beach; the crossing takes about 5 minutes and costs a couple of euros each way.

Sunrise and off-season

In July and August the beach fills quickly by 11 am; arrive before 10 am to claim a good spot, or come in late afternoon when the light turns golden and the crowds thin. September is arguably the best month — warm water, fewer visitors, and the old town's festival season in full swing.

Off-season the beach is wide, windswept and strikingly beautiful for a long walk, with the Jaizkibel massif reflected in the calm estuary water on still mornings.
