Txingudi Bay Nature Reserve
Spread across the mouth of the Bidasoa river between Hondarribia, Irun and the French town of Hendaye, the Txingudi Bay reserve is one of the most important wetland habitats in the western Pyrenees — and it is barely five minutes' walk from the old town. Migrating flamingos, spoonbills, grey herons and dozens of wader species stop here on the Atlantic flyway, making it a genuine wildlife surprise
Wildlife and Walking Trails
The reserve's main access point from Hondarribia is the Paseo del Butrón promenade, which runs along the estuary shore from the harbour south toward Irun. At low tide the mudflats attract hundreds of dunlin, redshank and black-tailed godwit; at high tide the birds concentrate on the saltmarsh vegetation and are easier to observe from the wooden hides positioned along the path.
Greater flamingos have become increasingly regular visitors, particularly between August and November, and a small flock is now present for much of the year. Bring binoculars — the birds are often 200–300 metres out on the mudflats.
Practical Information and Best Times
The Txingudi Ecomuseum in Irun (a 20-minute walk along the promenade, or reachable by local bus) has free interpretive displays about the estuary ecosystem and helpful staff who can tell you what has been spotted that week. It is a useful first stop if you are serious about birdwatching.
Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–November) migration periods offer the greatest species diversity. Early morning visits before 09:00 are quietest and the soft light is ideal for photography. The full promenade walk from Hondarribia harbour to Irun and back is about 8 km on flat, paved paths.
