Casco Medieval (Old Town)
Hondarribia's fortified old town is one of the best-preserved medieval quarters in the Basque Country, its cobbled lanes lined with 15th-century stone mansions whose wrought-iron balconies overflow with geraniums every summer. Step through the Puerta de Santa María gate and you enter a living postcard that has barely changed in five centuries.
The Heart of the Quarter
The Plaza de Armas is the social nucleus of the old town, anchored by the imposing Castillo de Carlos V — a 10th-century fortress that Carlos I of Spain once called home and that now operates as a state-run parador hotel. Even if you're not staying, walk inside to admire the courtyard and order a coffee in the bar.
Calle Mayor runs the spine of the quarter and is the best street for slow wandering: look up at the carved stone coats of arms above doorways, the painted wooden eaves, and the riot of colour from hanging flower baskets that earn Hondarribia prizes in Spain's prettiest-balcony competitions every year.
Walls and Gates
The medieval walls are largely intact and you can walk sections of the rampart for free, with views stretching across the Bidasoa estuary to France. The Puerta de Santa María, with its twin towers and the town's coat of arms carved in stone, is the most photogenic entry point and the classic shot every visitor takes.
A second gate, the Puerta del Juncal, opens toward the fishing harbour and is quieter — locals use it as a shortcut and you're unlikely to find a tour group blocking your view.
