Jaizkibel Mountain Viewpoint (Alto de Jaizkibel)
Rising to 543 metres directly behind Hondarribia, Mount Jaizkibel is the westernmost peak of the Pyrenees and delivers some of the most dramatic coastal panoramas in northern Spain. On a clear day the view from the road's highest mirador sweeps from the French Basque coast all the way to the cliffs of the Gipuzkoa shoreline.
The drive and the miradors
The GI-3440 road winds up through dense oak and eucalyptus forest before breaking into open heathland near the summit, where a series of informal pull-offs offer unobstructed views over the Bay of Biscay. The most rewarding stop is the mirador just below the Ermita de Guadalupe, where the Atlantic stretches to the horizon in three directions.
On clear winter mornings the snow-capped Pyrenees are visible to the east while the ocean glitters below — a combination that feels almost implausibly cinematic for a drive of under 15 minutes from the town centre.
Ermita de Guadalupe
The whitewashed 16th-century hermitage of Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe sits just below the summit ridge and is a pilgrimage site for locals. The terrace in front of it is arguably the single best viewpoint on the mountain, framing Hondarribia's old town, the Bidasoa mouth and Hendaye in one glance.
A simple bar-restaurant operates beside the hermitage (hours vary by season), serving local cider and pintxos to hikers and drivers alike — a very Basque combination of spirituality and good eating.
Hiking the GR-121
The long-distance GR-121 trail traverses the full ridge of Jaizkibel, connecting Hondarribia to Pasaia in roughly 5-6 hours of walking. The path passes through coastal scrubland alive with gorse and wild orchids in spring and offers constant sea views that make the effort entirely worthwhile.
Shorter loops of 2-3 hours are easy to devise by combining the trail with the road. Wear layers — the ridge catches Atlantic wind even on warm days.
