Jaizkibel Mountain Road Mirador
The GI-3440 road that climbs from Hondarribia over the flank of Mount Jaizkibel (543 m) is one of the great scenic drives of northern Spain, and the unsigned pull-off miradors along its crest deliver jaw-dropping views of the Bay of Biscay, the French Basque coast and, on clear days, the distant silhouette of the Pyrenees meeting the sea at Cap Higuer.
The Drive and the Views
Leave Hondarribia on the road signed toward Pasaia and within ten minutes you are on open heathland, the Atlantic crashing on the cliffs far below. The best viewpoint is roughly halfway along near the Ermita de San Enrique chapel, where a gravel area lets you stop safely and take in an unbroken 180-degree panorama of the Cantabrian coast.
On the clearest winter and spring mornings, visibility can stretch to the mountains above Biarritz. In summer the light is golden until well past 9 pm, making this an outstanding spot for sunset photography.
Combining with a Walk
The GR-121 long-distance trail runs along the Jaizkibel ridge and you can park at the Ermita de Guadalupe sanctuary — a working pilgrimage chapel with a simple bar-restaurant — and walk sections of the ridge on foot. The trail to Cap Higuer lighthouse at the tip of the headland takes about 90 minutes one way and passes through wind-sculpted heather and gorse with the sea always in view.
The sanctuary bar serves hot bocadillos and local cider; it is a favourite stop for weekend cyclists who tackle the Jaizkibel climb, a legendary stage on the Clásica San Sebastián professional cycling race.
