Pintxos Bars of Calle San Pedro
The lower town's Calle San Pedro is Hondarribia's answer to San Sebastián's famous pintxos bars — a single street dense with taverns whose counters groan under architecturally ambitious bites of bread, seafood and cured meat. Locals call it the best pintxos street outside Donostia, and they are not wrong.
How to do a pintxos crawl
The etiquette is simple and joyful: enter a bar, order one or two pintxos from the counter and a small glass of Txakoli or local cider, eat standing up, then move to the next bar. Each place has a speciality — one might be famous for its crab-stuffed txangurro pintxo, another for its anchovy-and-pepper combination on crusty bread.
Do not try to eat everywhere at once. Pick three or four bars, go slowly, and let conversation with bar staff guide you to the day's best options. The whole ritual is as social as it is gastronomic.
Standout bars to try
Sebastián Taberna on Calle Mayor (just off San Pedro) is a local institution, its pintxos consistently voted among the region's best, with a particular reputation for creative hot bites served to order. Arrive at opening time (around 12 pm or 7 pm) for the freshest selection.
Hermandad de Pescadores, the fishermen's guild restaurant on the waterfront, is technically a sit-down restaurant but serves pintxos at the bar and is the place to eat kokotxas (cod cheeks) in Hondarribia — a dish that here reaches near-religious levels of excellence.
Txakoli: the essential pairing
No pintxos session in Hondarribia is complete without Txakoli, the bone-dry, lightly sparkling white wine produced on the hillsides above town. Bars pour it from a height to aerate it, producing a gentle fizz — watch the theatre of the pour as much as you enjoy the wine itself.
Getariako Txakolina is the local DO; ask for a glass of the estate-bottled versions for a step up in complexity from the standard house pour. A glass typically costs €2.50-4.
