Mirador del Castillo de Hervás
The ruined medieval castle perched above Hervás rewards the short but steep climb with a 360-degree panorama that takes in the terracotta rooftops of the Jewish quarter, the Ambroz valley and the snow-capped Sierra de Béjar on clear winter days. It is the single best vantage point in town and costs nothing to visit.
The Climb Up
From the Plaza del Convento, follow the signed footpath uphill through terraced vegetable gardens and olive trees — the ascent takes around 20 minutes at a gentle pace. The path is uneven in places, so wear closed shoes rather than sandals.
As you gain height the Jewish quarter unfolds below you like a map, its rooftop patchwork of Roman tiles and kitchen gardens visible in a way that no street-level photograph can capture. Locals come up here at dusk to watch the light turn the valley amber.
What Remains of the Castle
Only a single curtain wall and a crumbled tower survive, but the masonry is impressive up close — massive granite blocks fitted without mortar, typical of 13th-century Castilian military construction. An information panel (in Spanish) explains the castle's role in the wars between the kingdoms of León and Castile.
The flat area around the ruins makes an excellent picnic spot. On clear days the view extends south across the Extremaduran plain for 60 km or more, and north to the high peaks of the Sierra de Francia.
