Garganta de Hervás & Río Ambroz Gorge
The Río Ambroz carves a lush gorge right on the doorstep of Hervás, offering a shaded riverside trail that threads through chestnut and oak forest without requiring a car or a guide. It is one of Extremadura's most rewarding short walks, and almost nobody outside the region knows it exists.
The Trail Into the Gorge
The path begins at the old stone bridge (Puente Viejo) at the foot of the Jewish quarter and follows the left bank of the Ambroz upstream for roughly 4 km to the natural pool known as La Piscina Natural de Hervás. The trail is well-marked with green-and-white waymarkers and gains very little elevation.
In spring the banks are carpeted with ferns and wild irises, while in October the chestnut trees turn the hillsides amber and gold. Locals harvest the chestnuts — a cornerstone of the regional economy — and you'll often see wicker baskets left at the trailhead.
Swimming & Wildlife
The natural pool at the trail's end is cold, clear and perfectly swimmable from June through early September. A small cascade feeds it from above, and the surrounding boulders make ideal picnic spots. Arrive before 11 am on summer weekends to secure a flat rock.
The gorge is prime habitat for the Eurasian dipper, a small bird that walks underwater along the riverbed. Kingfishers flash upstream at dawn, and if you're quiet you may spot otters in the shallower stretches near the bridge.
