Marché de Guebwiller — Saturday Morning Market

Every Saturday morning, Place du Marché and the surrounding streets fill with the cheerful commerce of the Florival valley: farmers with baskets of mirabelle plums, cheesemakers from the Vosges foothills, and bakers whose kouglof loaves are still warm from the oven. This is Guebwiller at its most authentically, deliciously alive.

What to Buy and Taste

The market is small enough to feel local but varied enough to fill a hamper worth writing home about. Look for Munster fermier (farm-made, far pungent and more complex than the supermarket version), fresh Alsatian pretzels dusted with coarse salt, and seasonal produce that shifts week by week — asparagus in May, golden mirabelles in August, pumpkins and walnuts in October.

Several wine producers from the surrounding Grand Cru slopes — Kitterlé, Kessler, Saering, and Spiegel all sit within walking distance of town — set up stalls and pour tasting samples freely. It is entirely acceptable to start your Riesling education before 10 am here.

The Market's Setting

Place du Marché is framed by a handsome ensemble of 17th- and 18th-century half-timbered and sandstone buildings that make even a bag of carrots feel photogenic. The nearby Église Saint-Léger (a Romanesque gem in its own right) looms benevolently over the stalls.

Arrive by 9 am for the best selection; by 12:30 pm most vendors are packing up. The café terraces on the square are ideal for a post-market coffee and a slice of tarte aux quetsches.
