Musée du Florival
Housed in a magnificent former Dominican convent, the Musée du Florival is one of those regional museums that punches far above its weight — its collection of Alsatian faïence, Gallo-Roman artefacts and paintings by local artist Théophile Schuler is genuinely world-class in ambition and curation. Most visitors to Alsace never find it.
The collection
The ground floor traces Guebwiller's history from Roman settlement through the powerful Murbach Abbey era, with original illuminated manuscripts and ecclesiastical silverware that would not look out of place in the Cluny in Paris.
The faïence rooms on the first floor display the output of the Guebwiller pottery workshops that flourished in the 18th and 19th centuries — vivid tin-glazed pieces in the distinctive Alsatian palette of cobalt, ochre and terracotta.
The building itself
The 14th-century Dominican church attached to the museum has been beautifully restored and is used for temporary exhibitions and summer concerts; the Gothic vaulting alone is worth the price of admission.
The cloister garden, planted with medicinal herbs in the medieval tradition, is a quiet place to sit after the galleries — one of Guebwiller's most peaceful hidden corners.
