Grand Ballon Summit & Sentier des Crêtes
At 1,424 m, the Grand Ballon is the highest peak in the Vosges massif, and on a clear day the panorama stretches from the Black Forest to the Alps — a view so vast it recalibrates your sense of scale. Guebwiller sits at the perfect gateway, making this one of the most rewarding half-day escapes in all of Alsace.
The Drive and the Hike
The Route des Crêtes winds up from Guebwiller through dense silver-fir forest, breaking into open grassland — the chaumes — near the summit. You can drive almost to the top, but the real reward comes from hiking the final ridge on the GR5 trail: wildflowers in June, bilberries in August, and a silence broken only by wind and the occasional paraglider.
The radar dome at the summit is an unmistakable landmark; circle around it to find the orientation table and the full 360-degree panorama. On exceptional winter days, Mont Blanc floats on the southern horizon like a rumour.
Wildlife and Seasons
The high meadows around the Grand Ballon are managed as traditional Vosges pasture and harbour rare orchids, gentians, and the Marsh Fritillary butterfly in early summer. Red deer are regularly spotted at dusk in the forest corridors below the treeline.
Winter transforms the summit into a modest ski and snowshoe area; the Chalet-Hôtel du Grand Ballon serves warming Flammekueche and local Munster cheese to hikers year-round, making it a reliable pit stop whatever the season.
