Château de Hugstein Ruins
Perched on a forested spur above Guebwiller, the ruined 13th-century Château de Hugstein rewards a short but steep climb with dramatic views over the town's terracotta rooftops, the ribbon of the Rhine plain and, on clear days, the dark line of the Black Forest beyond. Few tourists make the effort — which is precisely why you should.
The climb and the castle
A marked footpath from the Rue du Château at the northern edge of town reaches the ruins in about 30 minutes through mixed woodland. The path is well-maintained but can be slippery after rain — wear proper shoes.
The castle was built by the bishops of Strasbourg and later became a residence of the powerful Murbach abbots. Only the keep and fragments of curtain wall survive, but they're atmospheric enough to justify the walk on their own.
The view that pays you back
From the keep's base you look directly down onto the geometric patchwork of Guebwiller's grand cru Kitterlé vineyard — one of Alsace's most celebrated slopes — with the town's church spires punctuating the middle distance.
Sunset from here, when the Rhine plain turns gold and the Vosges ridgeline goes purple, is genuinely one of the region's unsung visual rewards.
