Parc National de la Chartreuse Day Hike
Just 20 minutes north of Grenoble's city centre, the Chartreuse Regional Natural Park unfolds into a world of limestone cliffs, dense fir forests and hidden monasteries. The circular hike from Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse to the Charmant Som summit (1867 m) is the park's most rewarding half-day walk.
The Charmant Som Trail
The trail begins at the car park above Saint-Pierre-de-Chartreuse village and climbs steadily through silver fir and beech forest for about 5 km, gaining 600 metres of elevation. The path is well-marked (yellow blazes) and the gradient is manageable for anyone reasonably fit; allow 2.5–3 hours up and 2 hours back.
At the summit, the treeline breaks dramatically to reveal an open plateau grazed by cows in summer, with a 360-degree panorama that includes Mont Blanc on a clear day to the northeast and the Vercors plateau to the south. A small refuge sells drinks and simple food in July and August.
The Grande Chartreuse Monastery
On the drive or bus route into the park, stop at the Musée de la Grande Chartreuse in Saint-Laurent-du-Pont — the monastery itself is closed to visitors, but the museum explains the Carthusian monks' daily life and the closely guarded recipe of Chartreuse liqueur with genuine insight. It's far more interesting than it sounds.
The valley road between Grenoble and Saint-Pierre passes the monastery walls and the famous Correrie building, where monks once received visitors. Even from the road, the scale of the complex rising against vertical limestone cliffs is quietly awe-inspiring.
