Les Halles Sainte-Claire
Tucked into the arcaded Place Sainte-Claire in the heart of Grenoble's old town, Les Halles Sainte-Claire is a covered market that has fed the city since the 19th century. Come on a Saturday morning and you'll find the stalls heaving with Chartreuse honey, Noix de Grenoble (the city's famous PDO walnuts), mountain cheeses and charcuterie from the surrounding valleys.
What to Buy
The walnuts of Grenoble hold France's very first PDO (Protected Designation of Origin) for a fresh fruit, awarded in 1938, and you can taste the difference — plumper, oilier and more complex than anything sold in a supermarket. Look for the Franquette, Mayette and Parisienne varieties, each with a subtly different flavour profile.
The cheese counters are equally compelling: Bleu du Vercors-Sassenage (another local PDO), Saint-Marcellin and Tomme de Savoie sit alongside artisan yogurts and fresh fromage blanc. Vendors are generous with samples, so arrive hungry.
Eating Around the Market
Several small restaurant counters open for lunch directly inside the halles, serving market-fresh dishes — gratin dauphinois, quenelles de brochet and seasonal salads — at prices that shame most city-centre restaurants. Grab a stool at the bar comptoir and order the plat du jour with a carafe of Crozes-Hermitage.
The surrounding Place Sainte-Claire spills into an outdoor market on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday mornings, where local farmers sell seasonal produce directly from their vans — a more rustic, cash-preferred experience than the covered hall.
