Bastille Fortress & Téléphérique
Grenoble's iconic cable car — locals call the glass gondolas 'les bulles' (the bubbles) — whisks you 264 metres above the rooftops in under five minutes, delivering panoramic views of three mountain ranges: the Belledonne, Vercors and Chartreuse massifs. At the top, the 19th-century Bastille fortress rewards walkers and gondola-riders alike with terraces that feel like the edge of the Alps.
The Ride Up
Launched in 1934, the Grenoble-Bastille téléphérique was the first urban cable car in France, and its spherical cabins remain one of the most distinctive design icons in the country. Board at the Stade Nautique station on the south bank of the Isère and watch the city grid shrink beneath you as the river glints silver below.
On busy summer evenings the queue can stretch 30 minutes, but the wait is worth it — the sunset light turns the Vercors cliffs a deep amber that no filter can improve.
Exploring the Fortress
The Bastille itself is free to roam once you're up top, a layered complex of 16th-to-19th-century ramparts, tunnels and gun emplacements that tell Grenoble's strategic military history. Pick up a free map at the kiosk and follow the signed trail through the underground galleries to the highest terrace for the full 360-degree panorama.
Several open-air restaurants and a panoramic bar operate on the terraces from spring through autumn, so budget time for a glass of local Chartreuse liqueur while the mountains turn pink at dusk.
