Bastille Fortress & Téléphérique
Grenoble's most iconic image is its fleet of glass gondolas — nicknamed 'les bulles' — floating up to the 19th-century Bastille fortress perched 476 metres above the Isère valley. From the ramparts you get a panorama that sweeps across three mountain massifs: Belledonne, Vercors and Chartreuse.
The Ascent
The Téléphérique de Grenoble-Bastille, inaugurated in 1934 and modernised several times since, is the oldest urban cable car in France still in operation. Its spherical cabins hold 6 passengers and the 5-minute ride over the old city rooftops is thrilling even before you reach the top.
At the summit, the Bastille itself is a layered complex of 16th-to-19th-century fortifications you can wander freely. Look for the Anneau de Mémoire sculpture and the rooftop terrace of the Café de la Bastille for a cold Chartreuse Verte with a view.
Hiking Down
Resist taking the cable car back and instead descend on foot via the Chemin de la Jalla or the steeper Montée Vauban staircase — both well-marked trails that drop you back into the Jardin des Dauphins and then the Parc Guy Pape within 40 minutes.
The descent path passes through fragrant scrub oak and limestone outcrops, with framed views of the Vercors cliffs that no gondola angle can match. Wear comfortable shoes; the stone steps can be slippery after rain.
