Les Halles Sainte-Claire
Tucked inside a handsome 19th-century iron-and-glass pavilion on Place Sainte-Claire, this covered market is where Grenoble cooks actually shop. Stalls overflow with Chartreuse honey, walnuts from the Isère valley, raclette wheels, and trout from mountain streams.
What to Buy
The Isère department is France's largest walnut-producing region, and you'll find every form here: fresh cerneaux in autumn, pressed walnut oil, walnut liqueur and pain aux noix. The AOC Noix de Grenoble label is the one to look for — its thin shell and sweet kernel are genuinely superior to generic walnuts.
Cheese counters pile up Beaufort d'Alpage, Tomme de Savoie and the pungent local Bleu du Vercors-Sassenage — one of only a handful of blue cheeses with an AOC designation. Ask the fromager for a sliver before you commit; they expect it.
Eating In and Around the Market
Several stalls sell ready-to-eat food: socca-style chickpea pancakes, charcuterie boards and steaming gratins dauphinois. Grab a stool at one of the communal counters inside and eat alongside market traders on their break — it's the most authentic €10 lunch in the city.
The square outside hosts an open-air extension on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday mornings, spilling across to Place aux Herbes with flower sellers, secondhand book stalls and seasonal produce. Arrive before 10:00 to avoid the crowds.
